Comic Book Movies Before They Were Cool

Hello nerds and nerdettes! Comic book movies have had a great run for the past 16 years thanks to CGI, 3D and other new technology that’s come along. But what about those comic book movies that everyone forgot? Let's jump into the DeLorean and take a little trip back through time and check these movies out!

In 1984, DC Comics released Supergirl to act as a spinoff to the very popular Superman films that starred Christopher Reeves. The film stars Faye Dunaway, Helen Slater as Supergirl, and Peter O'Toole, with Marc McClure reprising his role as Jimmy Olsen from the Superman films. He was the only actor to do so. The film was released in the United Kingdom on July 19, 1984 and failed to impress critics and audiences alike. Dunaway and O'Toole earned Golden Raspberry Award nominations for Worst Actress and Worst Actor, respectively. However, Slater was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Actress. The film's failure ultimately led the Salkinds to sell the Superman rights to Cannon Films in 1986. Supergirl hasn't had any kind of recognition until 2015, being released on CBS as an ongoing series that I, personally, am still not too impressed with.

In 1989, Marvel released The Punisher that starred Dolph Lundgren. The film changes many details of the comic book origin and the main character does not even wear the trademark "skull". Frank Castle is the city's most wanted, and most mysterious, vigilante, known as "The Punisher". He has killed 125 criminals in the past five years. An expolice officer, Castle's family was murdered in a mob hit, in which Castle was also thought to have perished. This combined with Castle's furtive methods of attack have made the Punisher's identity a mystery to the general public. Thank goodness for the 2004 reboot, right?

In 1990, Marvel Entertainment tried to release Captain America before all the awesome effects were available. While the film takes several liberties with the comic's storyline, it features Steve Rogers becoming Captain America during World War II to battle the Red Skull, being frozen in ice, and subsequently being revived to save the President of the United States from a crime family that dislikes his environmentalist policies. The film was supposed to be released in the summer of 1990, to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of Captain America. Several release dates were announced between fall 1990 and winter 1991, but the film went unreleased for two years before debuting directtovideo and on cable television in the United States in the summer of 1992 and was given a limited theatrical release internationally.

In 1994, Dark Horse took a shot at the big screen and brought out Time Cop. The film stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as a police officer in 1994 and a U.S. Federal agent in 2004, when time travel has been made possible. It also stars Ron Silver as a rogue politician and Mia Sara as the agent's wife. The story follows an interconnected web of episodes in the agent's life as he fights timetravel crime and investigates the politician's unusually successful career. Timecop remains Van Damme's highest grossing film (his second to break the $100 million barrier for a worldwide gross) as a lead actor. It is generally regarded as one of Van Damme's better films by critics and one of my favorite films by Van Damme.

Also in 1994, an independent film for the Fantastic Four was made but was never actually officially released. Executive produced by low budget specialist Roger Corman and Bernd Eichinger (who went on to produce a big budget Fantastic Four film in 2005), the film was based on Marvel Comics' long running comic book and featured the origin of the Fantastic Four and that superhero team's first battle with the evil Doctor Doom, combining the superteam's origin from The Fantastic Four #1 and Doom's origin from Fantastic Four Annual #2 with original elements. Despite a tentative scheduled 1994 release date, the film was ultimately never released officially, but illegal copies began circulating after a few years. Too bad they've never been able to make a decent FF film.

In 1998, Marvel took another stab at another character. Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD was a television film that was first broadcast on May 26, 1998 on Fox. Directed by Rod Hardy, the film stars David Hasselhoff as Fury, a retired super spy who is approached to return to duty to take down the terrorist organization HYDRA, who threaten to attack Manhattan with a pathogen they have reconstituted known as the Death's Head virus. This was the first and only time Nick Fury was given his own film.

Have you seen any of these films?

Are there any films that we missed along the way that failed before comic book films were cool? Let us know in the comments.

Wizard World St. Louis | Sean Schemmel

The voice of Goku!!!! Sean Schemmel will also be at this year's Wizard World St. Louis!

Sean Schemmel is a biological entity known as a "human" born November 21st (the same day as his Mother and Bjork) 1968 in Waterloo, Iowa. When he was 12 years old he heard a voice inside his head that said "You must play the French Horn". So he did. Professionally. But then in 1999, there was an open casting call for a show called Dragonball Z. Sean's friends who had always been thoroughly encouraging and impressed with his ability to do character voices and impressions, insisted he audition. To which he replied "No, I just wanna be a French Horn player." But after much prodding, he went to the audition and landed the lead role of Goku. It was at this point, Sean realized that he not only liked voice acting better than playing Horn in orchestras (because that is a miserable experience, trust me), he was better at it. So he switched careers moved to New York City, and managed to continue voice acting multiple roles on many hit shows such as Pokemon, Yugioh, Yugioh GX, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kappa Mikey, Speed Racer, Winx Club and 12 different thumbs on Thumb Wrestling Federation.

Sean was also an ADR director for NYAV Post, where adapted for english and directed numerous anime titles including Space Pirate Mito, Midori Days, Sadamitsu: The Destoyer, and Ah! My Goddess.

Sean has also lent his voice to many video games, including the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Dark Knight Rises for iPad/iPhone/Android, all current Dragonball Z games as Goku, King Kai, and Nail. Jason in Gangstar Vegas, and many others.

In the realm of audiobooks, Sean is an award winning narrator, winning a 2010 Earphones award for his work in The Big Splash by Jack D. Ferraiaolo, and was nominated for a 2011 Audie Award in the category of humor for his work in Shit My Dad Says, by Justin Halpern and won a 2013 Audie for his work in I Suck At Girls by the same author.

Sean makes many appearances at conventions around the world, and is known for his "highly informative and entertaining but down to earth panels" or at least that's what a bunch of people told him.

Sean currently lives in Los Angeles with his girlfriend and their magical dog. Though he still plays Horn from time to time he is more focused on electric guitar at the moment. He's listening to Joe Satriani as he types this bio. Later, he's going to try to beat his girlfriend at Mario Kart. He is going to fail miserably.

Sean is also a gear head and in his home studio he uses Blue mics, and pres, Focusrite and Audient and Rupert Neve Designs pres, eqs and compressors, and Sony Oxford, Waves, SSL and API plugins.

Wizard World St. Louis | Elizabeth Henstridge

Team Nerd Life was excited to see the addition of Elizabeth Henstridge added to the guest list of this years Wizard World!

Having grown up on a farm in England’s northern city of Sheffield, Elizabeth became the black sheep of the family when she chose to pursue acting in lieu of a “proper job.” She studied at Birmingham University followed by East 15 Acting School, London and soon thereafter moved to Los Angeles. Within 6 weeks of arriving, she booked a leading role in J.J. Abrams and Mark Schwahn’s CW pilot Shelter. Her first year culminated with filming the feature Reach Me with Sylvester Stallone, and being offered the role of Agent Jemma Simmons in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Here's Looking at you, 2016

Hey nerds and nerdettes! 2015 was a great year to be a nerd with all the fantastic movies that were released. But we shouldn't be sad to see it go. 2016 could possibly be even better for nerdkind. So let’s take a look at some of the upcoming releases in 2016 and start getting excited for a new year!

March 25th Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen is any DC fanboy's dream come true! Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

May 27th XMen Apocalypse

Since the dawn of civilization, Apocalypse was worshipped as a god. He was the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s XMen universe, and amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto, to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven with the help of Professor X must lead a team of young XMen to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

June 3rd Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael are at it again! Only this time, they find themselves pitted against two of their greatest villains in TMNT history. Bebop and Rocksteady! Created by the great scientific mind, Baxter Stockman, Bebop and Rocksteady are hired to take out the turtles after the demise of Shredder.

This is just the first half of the year and it is PACKED with awesomeness! Let's just see what the second half of 2016 will bring!

Batman v Superman | So Much Whoa

Say what you may about Jesse Eisenberg and how Doomsday looks a bit like a cave troll from the Lord of the Rings just with heat breath eyes this trailer was filled with a whole lot of whoa! Many people knocked the decision to star Ben Affleck as the Bat but I have always thought it was a legit choice. This trailer was another indication of that good choice for me. His calm yet aggressive demeanor sets the tone for how he approaches his role as Bruce Wayne and he seemed to carry over that raspy Bat-tone Bale brought to the character. Gal Gadot makes an appearance saving the day for Batman as Doomsday looks to take him out. My one question is when will we get to see Jason Momoa?

What did you think of the trailer? Did you pee your pants a little?

Pretty close eh?

Pretty close eh?

As a little bonus I did have a favorite part to this trailer. Joe whats your favorite part? Well thanks for asking. The end of July the lovely Mrs. Nerd and I bought a new Jeep Renegade and too my surprise I see a sweet ghosted out Jeep Renegade. Could we possibly own a Batmobile? :)

The Flux Capacitor Car Charger. Now you can get that 1.21 jigawats right into your phone! Just plug it into your car's 12V vehicle power adapter and turn it on. 88mph and . . . ok, don't go that fast. That would be bad, because the Flux Capacitor Car Charger won't really take you through time but it will charge all your USB-powered goodies. Each Flux Capacitor Car Charger has two USB ports, each capable of charging almost any USB powered device. But it also has that beautiful Flux Capacitor light sequence we all know and love.

Retro Duo Portable NES/SNES Game System. Yes, you're reading this right: a portable version of the Retro Duo NES/SNES system. So now you can take your 8bit NES and 16bit SNES games on the road! The Retro Duo Portable Game System is pretty much the dream configuration for any retro gamer. Not only can you play solo, but it also hooks up to fullsized televisions as well. Use the included port adapter to connect two SNES (or equivalent) controllers.

Star Wars R2D2 Bluetooth Speaker. R2D2 has all sorts of surprises inside him. He's got plans and a message from Princess Leia, Luke's lightsaber, rocket jets, and a real mean streak (hey, he flat out kills another droid in an episode of Clone Wars). He also has a bunch of these speakers inside, so he always has a gift ready for new people he meets. Plug him into a USB port, and he'll charge up. When he's charged, either pair the speaker with your Bluetoothenabled phone or plug your audio device into Artoo's standard 3.5mm audio jack. Artoo will light up, literally, including the familiar indicator light and some new funky blue "underdome" lighting he's had installed. Since he's Bluetooth, you can even make calls on him when you have your phone paired up. But his raison d'etre is to play music for you.

Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise Flying Disc. Springtime at Starfleet Academy is just like any other higher learning institution. The grass is painted green, the Orion students are green, and sometimes even the space bologna is green! But the main similarity is how the student bodies spend more and more time outside: studying, socializing, and throwing their Constitution-class flying discs all over campus. And now you can relive your time at the Academy with your very own Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise Flying Disc. Each disc is pretty much just what it looks like. There's the saucer section which is the part you throw and also has the rest of the ship attached (made of foam). It's the most fun you can have without anti-gravity, a bottle of Saurian brandy, and four Tribbles!

Planet Comicon | Ming Chen

Star of AMC’s Comic Book Men

Ming Chen’s road to the Stash all began in 1995 when the college student, video store employee and avid Kevin Smith follower, developed a fan website based on the movie Clerks. Smith, who appreciated Chen’s work, reached out and asked him to create a website for his production company, View Askew Productions. Almost nineteen years later, not only does Chen continue to work on all of Smith’s online projects, but has also ventured into several other areas within the Kevin Smith empire, most recently hosting a weekly podcast called “I Sell Comics” with Michael Zapcic on Smith’s radio network S.I.R.: SModcast Internet Radio. Chen is not only the technical expert for The Stash, but also the perfect person to ask to do the jobs no one else wants to do. He takes it all with a smile, and is happy to be a part of the team.

During his free time, Chen does pro bono website work for two non-profit organizations: Street Poets Inc. and The Kenny Gordon Foundation. Chen has been married to his wife Debbie for 12 years and has two children, Lillian and Harrison.

Welcome to the team | Dustin

Hello fellow nerds and nerdettes! Dustin here! The newest addition to the LTNL family! I know you have lots of questions about who I am, where I come from and what makes me the nerd I am today. So allow myself to introduce....myself.

TMNTClassicsRetroFeaturedImage1-630x0.jpg

As I said, my name is Dustin and I was born and raised in Jefferson City, MO.For as long as I can remember, superheroes, comic books and science fiction have always been apart of my life. My dad and uncles read comics when they were kids and some even still read them to this day. I remember being Superman two years in a row for Halloween and I never missed an episode of the TMNT cartoons on Saturday mornings. That was really the beginning of the "nerditude".

boba-fett-feature-09022015.jpg

My cousins and I would play ninja turtles for hours. Whether it be with all the action figures we had or making our own bandanas and weapons and hitting the back yard to fight off the evil Shredder and his foot soldiers. I never actually knew that they were based off of a pretty violent comic book until I got a little older. I loved the movies. I still do. But then, something happened. A muscle bound cyborg, protecting a 13 year old kid, shooting big guns and riding a motorcycle changed the way I would look at sci-fi. Yes, the terminator. My all time favorite movie, Terminator 2, was my first experience with not just one of the best action heroes of all time, but to a movie franchise I cherish to this day. Sure, some may not be as good as others but, that's what happens with a franchise that's as old as I am. Another franchise I fell in love with took a little time to develop. Star Wars came along when I was around 11. And, like almost every other fan of Star Wars, Boba Fett became my favorite character. A man of few words with one of the most badass ships, the Slave 1, and no regard for life. How do you not like someone like that? I think that's why I like the Punisher, as well. He'd rather shoot a criminal in the face than give them the time of day. As time has gone on and more comic book movies, TV shows and games are being released, being a nerd has never been more difficult. But I wouldn't have it any other way!

Planet Comicon | Jason David Frank

I was beyond excited to see that Jason David Frank will be at Planet Comicon 2016! 2 Missouri cons in the same year? Its a Team JDF Ambassador's dream come true! Here is the bio they put on there site!  Click the pictures for more info!

Jason David Frank is well-known for his role of Tommy Oliver in the long-running television show Power Rangers. His character has morphed into the most different power rangers in the show’s twenty year history. He first morphed on the scene as the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger, a bad boy turned good, who after only ten episodes was intended to be written out of the show. However, due to his popularity, Jason David Frank’s character was able to morph into the Mighty Morphin White Ranger, Red Zeo, Red Turbo and then returned in 2004 as the Black DinoThunder Ranger.

Throughout Power Ranger history, Jason David Frank’s character has appeared in 225 total episodes and counting, more episodes than any other ranger. He also starred in the series both full-length movies, “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie” (1995) and “Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie” (1997). In 2013, Jason David Frank reprised his role of the Green Ranger in the Power Ranger’s 20th Anniversary season, which features a mega war that features many rangers from the show’s history. With his dynamic screen presence and outstanding martial arts, he has catapulted Tommy to legendary fame in the Power Ranger fandom and to this day maintains a fan base that stretches around the world.

His martial arts is not an act, Jason Frank, an inductee of the World Karate Union Hall of Fame, is a highly accomplished and respected martial artist with 34 years experience. In 1994, he created his own martial arts system, “Toso Kune Do,” which means “Way of the Fighting Fist” and incorporates many different aspects of martial arts. Jason David Frank currently holds a seventh degree black belt in American Karate, a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and in February 2013, he received the title of Master of Muay Thai by the world-renowned Muay Thai trainer Grand Master Toddy (Arjan). He is the owner and operator of Rising Sun Karate and MMA, with three schools in Texas and one in California.
Actor and martial artists are not his only roles, Jason David Frank is also an entrepreneur, MMA fighter, and world record holder. He is the founder and CEO of Jesus Didn’t Tap, the first Christian-based line of MMA Clothing and fight gear. It was one of the first apparel company to recognize and celebrate the faith and commitment of MMA fighters. Since its inception, Jesus Didn’t Tap has broaden its name in the MMA world and has been the sponsor to many MMA fighters. In January 2013, Jason David Frank became the Guinness World Record Holder for most 1‐inch pine board broken during freefall. He, who was introduced to skydiving during Power Rangers, shattered the previous record with seven broken pine boards.

With his recent achievements in 2013, Jason Frank has begun to document his momentous endeavors in a reality series, “My Morphin Life.” The first season episodes include his world record achievement, receiving his prestigious Arjarn title in Muay Thai, his return to Power Rangers as the Legendary Power Ranger, his momentous convention touring, and more. The reality show’s first season has already been launched via the Bat in The Sun Youtube Channel and currently has more than a million views. Season two of My Morphin Life has finished filming and is already in negotiations to air in a major network.

This is not the first time Jason David Frank works with Bat in the Sun in November 2013, the two worked on the White Ranger vs. Scorpion Super Power Beat Down, a show that pins super hero against super hero. The highly popular episode has been viewed over five million times and goes down in the show’s history as the most voted battle. With so many successful collaborations, Jason David Frank and Bat in the Sun are working together on an action packed movie, which he will star in as the hero.

Ever so faithful to his beginning roots of portraying a superhero, Jason David Frank is currently working on bringing a Green Ranger series to life, which will again bring him to his original ranger, who has become the most popular ranger in Power Ranger history due to Jason David Frank’s strong presence in social media. He currently has half a million Facebook followers and counting and with more than five million people view his page per week. Jason Frank’s constant interaction with his fans, free giveaways, contests, and more have made him excel above the rest as the Floyd Mayweather of social media.

This popularity has also opened other ventures, like a possible involvement in the Power Rangers reboot movies, recently announced by Saban Entertainment and Lionsgate Films. Lionsgate Films is responsible for extremely successful movies such as the Twilight Saga, The Hunger Games, Dogma, American Psycho and Fahrenheit 9/11.

Always someone of great passion and determination, it is safe to say that we can expect much more from Jason Frank in the years to come.

Mobile Game of the Week | Summoner's War

So I started playing this game a while ago thanks to the ad above however I stopped playing just as quick as I started. Not sure why but gameplay wasn't exactly my cup of tea. Recently a co-worker mentioned he played and I checked out his floating palace in the sky and saw all of his awesome characters and I knew I had to give it another try. I have played maybe 3-4 weeks now and definitely ashamed I stopped playing. The downfall of playing this tho is that it is digging into my Clash of Clans time which by the way my push to Titan League sputtered out around 3380 trophies! Ha.

Like I said Summoner's War is an addicting little game. As a matter of fact there are 3 of us at work that have been pretty active in the game the past month. This has definitely helped with staying active in the game and has helped at least me see what to look forward to in the game. His user name is _Stumpy_ he has been playing the game for quite a while and has been a big help for myself and my co-worker in guiding us through the game. Here are a few of his top monsters!

Because I'm no where near the level he is my monsters are not nearly as strong but I'm still a proud monster owner. Here are 5 of my favorite monsters that I currently have!

Anyways here are some of my Positives and Negative about the game.

Positive:

- FREEmium: you can at least download it, take it on a test drive and if you don't like it no harm no foul

- Graphics: Advanced monster styling is great... one day I'll get there

- Gameplay: RTS gameplay is surprisingly fun to me especially the feature that attacks for me "set it and forget it"

- Storyline: surpised to say this but the story so far is pretty good

Negative:

- FREEmium: yes its both positive and negative. Pay to win or advance more quickly is a trend in most FREEmium games and that's no different for Summoner's War

- Scrolls: most annoying thing about the game is getting a Mystical Scroll and getting a crappy monster

Do you play Summoner's War? If you do find me and add me my username is: ~ICON~

What do you think about the game?

Avengers Age of Ultron | Funko POP Review

Hello all you Funko Fanatics! Lorne here to bring you another review on your favorite collectible since the Beanie Baby………. Except these are more awesome. Today we’re reviewing the Avengers: Age of Ultron pop vinyls. I’m an absolutely HUGE Marvel lover. I’ve been Team Iron Man for as long as I can remember, so you can imagine how quickly I was brought back to my nerdy side, and childhood for that matter, when they started making Marvel movies. Avengers: AOU is definitely my favorite of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. I’m sure there will be naysayers to that, but we aren’t here to debate movies, we’re here to talk about these awesome Pops!

Hopefully, if you’re anything like me, you have the entire set by now, including the Hulk Buster. If you don’t have the Hulk Buster from the Marvel Collector Corps, sign up ASAP and get him into the collection! The details on the Avengers are amazing. I feel Funko is starting to out-do themselves in the details. From the pictures you might not be able to tell much, but if you own them, go take a closer look. One detail I really enjoyed a lot, that I think must’ve taken some time to design, is Visions Cape. If you catch a close up look of it, it almost likes like a circuit board from a computer. I liked that effect considering how he’s an android. They definitely played into the details on this one. Even the standards, such as not forgetting Captain America’s Shield, Hawkeye’s bow and of course, Mjolnir (Thor’s Hammer). Since I’ve been an Iron Man fan for many years, I’m a bit biased to think they showed him a little more attention. They didn’t just give him closed fights and a pose. Funko gave him FLIGHT! Very awesome addition to the figure itself.

Now who wants to start complaining with me? Anyone else a bit perturbed it took months to see the ladies of The Avengers get their own Pops! It felt like it took forever. I wanted the whole lineup! Luckily, we got them. Black widow wielding her batons and Scarlet Witch (no telekinetic powers included).  All the Avengers outfits are movie accurate in my eyes, even being stripped down to the minimalist details. I couldn’t be more excited how these came out.

Here’s one issue…………. WHERE IS QUIKSILVER?!?! Yes, if you collect and have been waiting, you can stop holding your breath. Quiksilver will NOT be made into a pop. If you’ve been wondering why, let me tell you this…… there is no answer as to why. Funko confirmed on their Twitter account they aren’t making one for him. WHY?! If someone has knowledge that Funko is messing with us, please let Living The Nerd Life know about this!!! There’s no reason behind it. Is it because he’s the only Avenger killed off currently? Maybe in the MCU, Quiksilver will be brought back to life with the power of the Infinity Stones and he’ll get a Pop 4 years from now? Either way, Funko, this is the first time I can say you’ve let your fans down!

Aside from the negative, all things considered, the Marvel Avengers: Age of Ultron Funkos are well worth the addition to your collection. Don’t forget the movie is already out on Digital HD. It will be available on Blu Ray and DVD October 2nd. Pre-order so you don’t miss out!
