Savior #1 Review

image.jpg

New this week in comics is “Savior,” brought to us by Todd McFarlane and Brian Holguin from Image comics.  This is a story of a strange man appearing from the wreckage of a plane crash in the corn fields of Kansas.  The story begins with a reporter waiting outside as the man referred to as “Samaritan” is escorted to the police station.  The crowd is a mix of divided people: half of the people hating on him and half begging him for help.  Then there is the sound of a gun and blood is splattered across the reporter's face.

The rest of the comic takes place six months earlier in Damascus, Kansas.  A reporter by the name of Cassandra Hale, who is originally from the town of Damascus, is giving a speech at the local high school.  She is delivering a speech on our tendency to believe in what we want to believe in, and this sentiment is a reoccurring theme throughout the comic.  Another central part of the story is that the media portrays the sides of each story that it wants to portray.  The general belief here is that the Internet was supposed to be our savior when in fact it may actually be our downfall.  The dialogue here is kind of preachy, but it's short enough to not push it too far.  Any further and it might have become a major turnoff.

image.jpg

The comic then centers around a teenage boy making a drug deal and staying home after being invited to a concert.  Later, there are scenes of Cassandra and her friends at a diner and making their way to the airport.  Here we are treated to a scene that delves further into the theme of people believing what they want to with a short discussion on religion and the role of questioning.  For some readers, this section might be too much, while for others it might not be enough.  Personally, I think it was done well enough to establish the Cassandra character and her belief structure without being overly preachy or sanctimonious. Here, we get a glimpse of the one they call “Samaritan” as he's walking out of a corn field carrying someone in his arms.

The artwork done by Clayton Crain, who you might know if you're an X-Force fan, is really well done.  The plane scenes are great and the scale of the plane is well done as it comes crashing down on the highway.  The devastation is done with amazing detail.  The fact that you can easily tell that it's raining through these scenes make it even better.  The artist does an impressive job capturing the overall doom with the rain, cloudy skies and general dark appearance. The facial expressions are fluid and often, you are left wondering what the characters are expressing.

“Savior” was a great read and a really intriguing way to start a new series.  It grabs you from the opening pages and never lets you go.  If you're at your local comic shop and see this sitting on the shelves, pick it up!  You won't be disappointed and in fact, you might even want to thank me.  I accept cash, paypal, and all major credit cards.

Ghost Town: A Mystery // Kickstarter

Our own Living The Nerd Life content creator, Jesse Kwe (@ShoPow11), is starting his new career as a comic book artist and his first big project is a graphic novel entitled "Ghost Town"! It will be a series of 3 books with the first one, subtitled "A Mystery", being comprised of 4 issues. This will be Jesse's big break into the comic book industry so please check out the Kickstarter page and if you like what you see, pick a reward level to pledge, and support Jesse's dream by sharing it with anyone else who you think might be interested in seeing this comic get made. Thank you!

About this project:

Ghost Town: A Mystery is the first book in the Ghost Town series. It follows Arthur the Auditor and his mission to Treble City to "Investigate recent disturbances from unknown assailants."

The Story:

America is not who she once was...

When the debt became too much and the will to fight was too little, they took her from us. They, The Lollipop Corporation, with their promises of freedom from our troubles bought her out from under us. We wasted her and they took her away.

Now we are only Share Holders, owning a fraction of the company that owns all of it; our land, our resources, and our futures.

So just like our brother Arthur Saulos, the Last Man Born in America, we gave up trying a long time ago.

Arthur took his job as Auditor, gave up his birth hands for metal ones, and put on the suit and tie for Lollipop.

Now he works the job.  He does the missions that are provided to him by a faceless machine, written in a code he didn't bother to learn. That's okay, he'll let The Librarian translate it for him. He's the only kind face in this company anyway.

The next mission that The Librarian hands him is Treble City, a Lollipop holding on the east coast. "Recent disturbances by an unknown assailant," is all Arthur has to go on, but he's used to that. It's been a long time since he's been to Treble City and he'll soon learn that things have most certainly changed in "The City That Never Sleeps."

Because, just like his mission, things in Treble City are not as they seem...

...but what ever really is...

...in Ghost Town...

Batman V Superman Trailer: 6 Major Reveals For The Movie

By Jesse Merkel

Thanks to a Portuguese-speaking leaker, the official teaser trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice dropped three days early. While footage of both titular heroes was limited, information about the movie we’re going to get was not.

One thing that wasn’t hidden was the dark tone. We’ve known for some time that the DC Cinematic Universe was shooting for a darker, grittier and more realistic tone, and this teaser made no attempt to hide it.

After carefully examining the video, there are several obvious takeaways that any diehard fan will want to be aware of.

This is a Man of Steel Follow-Up

When the title for the second installment in DC’s fledgling shared universe was announced, the Internet reacted with concern. Would this be a Man of Steel follow-up? Would we get to see the reactions to the impact of Superman’s arrival?

In short, yes. This is a direct sequel. We’re dropped into a Metropolis that’s in the midst of rebuilding, as evident by the memorial statue and the construction crane in the background. Given the range of emotional reactions on display, it’s all-to-evident that this movie is going to answer a lot of the questions that audience were left asking in 2013.

Realistic Reactions

We live in a world where the masses constantly fear and resent those a the top who horde all of the money and power, and because of that, there’s no way in hell that Superman would earn the publics trust the way he did in Richard Donner’s time.

Each week, the news cycle contains stories of another famous person in the middle of some kind of scandal, and a public that is more than happy to pile on. The audio clips from Charlie Rose, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Holly Hunter and Jesse Eisenberg in the trailer realistically mirror how things would be.

An alien with powers that seem downright godlike has been revealed to the world. Other members of his race attempted to invade and terraform the planet with radically advanced technology. Of course the planet would be thrown into chaos. Half of the people seem ready to worship him, while others fear and distrust him.

Society loves tearing down politicians and movie stars. Can you imagine the urge to rip someone like Kal-El apart?

A War-Weary Batman

Given that this version of Bruce Wayne/Batman is influenced by The Dark Knight Returns, it’s not surprising to see an older version of the character. Ben Affleck’s temples have a touch of gray, while both of the batsuit’s shown have signs of damage from previous conflicts.

The haunting speech given by Jeremy Irons, who plays Alfred Pennyworth, show a butler talking to a friend that’s considering rekindling a fire that may have put out long ago. No one would ever want to see someone they love take up that lifestyle again, especially if they’re thinking of going after someone like Superman.

We also see suits that are incredibly intimidating. An older and more wise batman knows how valuable a psychological edge is when fighting crime, and whereas Iron Man’s suits are designed for extreme combat, Batman’s cape and cowl were always made to instill fear first and foremost.

More Bat-Tech

The Batman films in the 90’s showed tech that bordered on cartoonish, while Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy waded in with its toes. In truth, the only time that Batman’s crime fighting and detective technology has been done justice is in DC’s animated features.

This take on the caped crusader seems to have upped the level of tech, without crossing the line to things that can’t be explained with real world science.

Both suits look extremely durable, but it’s the armored suit, with glowing eyes that may indicate infrared or night vision, that stands out. The suit also appears to have a built-in vocal modeler to both disguise and intimidate. Lord only knows what other tech is hidden away.

The batmobile looks like the marriage of a corvette and a tank. The batwing seems inspired by the B-2 stealth bomber. The classic shot of Batman perched on a rooftop holding rifle with a scope? That seems to be directly from the pages of The Dark Knight Returns, where Bruce Wayne had used guns to shot rubber bullets and small grappling hooks.

A Global Problem

Superman may still stand for truth, justice and the American way (He did grow up in Kansas, after all!), but the trailer gave us indications that he’ll probably be serving as a protector around the world.

There have been rumors of a catastrophic opening scene taking place in the Middle East, which may or may not have to do with the soldiers that are bowing before Kal-El in sand, with bright sunlight coming from over head. The trailer also shows him catching a fallen Russian spacecraft or missile, and making an appearance at what looks like the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico.

Given what a political and cultural lightening rod that he appears to become, it’s probably safe to assume that these acts of heroism will be viewed with both adulation and resentment.

A Preview of Things to Come

The trailer was filled with several hints at the future of DC’s shared universe. Remember that scene of Batman standing in the large disheveled room with graffiti on the pillars? Not only was a Riddler question mark present, but if you look closely underneath it and to the left, the word “Aphrodite” has been spray-painted as well. As any Wonder Woman fan will tell you, it was Aphrodite who gave Diana Prince her beauty and power after she was born.

A number of people believe that the glass case behind Bruce Wayne could be holding a Robin memorial, which could give credence to the rumors that Red Hood could be showing up in the future.

The icy stare from Bruce Wayne may also hint that this version of the character will be like the one shown in comics such as JLA: Tower of Babel. He’ll never fully trust, even when he should. He’ll also no doubt be prepared for every possible contingency, either through technology or detective work.

In Conclusion…

The darker tone presented here is not for everyone. In fact, the serious tone and real world emotions may scare off fans that have become accustomed to Marvels lighter, more escapist theme. Some people just want good popcorn fun that doesn’t require deep thought, and that’s okay.

As a big DC fan however, I’m excited that these characters are making their way to the big screen with a different take than the one exhibited by Marvel. Superhero movies shouldn’t need to have slapstick moments, witty zingers, or forced romance peppered in to reel in audiences. They can ask the audience to take the idea of superheroes seriously, and thank God that DC decided to take this risk!

Furious 7 Director James Wan On If He Would Like To Direct Dwayne Johnson In Shazam

From ComicBook.com

image.jpg

Furious 7 races into theaters this weekend. As members of the comics community, though, we're always thinking into the future. On Friday, we talked to James Wan in an exclusive interview and asked him if he would like to work with Furious 7 star, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson again on his upcoming Shazam film, where he'll play Black Adam.

CB: I do hear whispers that you might be in talks for a DC or Warner Brothers movie. Is that true?

Wan: There's lots of talks about lots of things so who knows what is true.

CB: Would you want to direct Dwayne Johnson again in Shazam?

Wan: Well, put it this way: I freakin' love Dwayne. He's an awesome guy and I would love to work with him again in a heartbeat. I know Dwayne wants to find something for me and him to do again in the future.

-----

So, it's a possibility. Wan certainly sounds keen to the idea of working with Johnson again!

Game of the Week: King of Thieves (mobile)

Steal gold from other players around the world and design your own dungeon's defense in this colorful platformer.

Key Features:

Unique platformer game with PvP multiplayer.

Steal gold and precious gems from other players.

Design your own dungeon to protect your treasury.

Upgrade your traps and craft outfits for your character.

Use boosts to break the defense of other players' dungeons.

Compete with other players in leagues for epic rewards.

Get to the Golden League and become the wealthiest thief in the world!

My thoughts:

This game caught me by surprise actually. I expected another game just like "Cut The Rope" or "Candy Crush" where you have a level, you pass and move on or fail and try again. Now, this is the case but its a little bit deeper than that.

To start off as far as gameplay it plays a little like Super Meat Boy without all the blood and guts. Traps in the levels prevent you from getting to that levels gold. Now here is what sets this game apart from others as well as turn this into a MMO. There are two gameplay options, first you can go through the campaign which are preset levels made to help you progress your gameplay. Secondly, you can attack other players bases to steal their gold.

Positives:

- Game play: similar to Super Meat Boy which makes this fun

- MMO: you'll never run out of levels or people to attack

- Controls: simple screen tapping makes for a very easy and fun experience

- Visuals: your thief is cute and the dungeouns are exciting to see whats next

- Upgrade: you can upgrade your dungeon to protect your gold

Negatives:

- Freemium: One feature per campaign level you need a key to open the door. There are 3 locks you try and break and its a guessing game. You only have a certain amount of keys to use once they are gone you wait for more or... Pay for more.

- MMO: not all people like the MMO style games (still try this game if you don't)

- Did I mention that you need Keys to unlock doors?

This game is definitely worth the download. If anything the campaign makes this a lot of fun, however the added benefit of attacking other players sets this game over the top for me. The big negative for me and I mentioned it twice, Keys! The locks are a complete guessing game. My very first level I tried to open I used 3 keys... I had a 33.333% chance of guessing it right but I didn't highly annoying. Anyways it's still worth the download and you should check it out.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Trailer Tease Could Come Thursday!

By Jesse Merkel

Strap in folks, because we’ve got an awesome one for you here! On Tuesday evening, Latino Review broke the news that Zack Snyder and the rest of the powers that be over at Warner Bros. may be set to release the first tease for the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer!

So what’s the surprise? The fact that it could be coming this Thursday!

According to the sources that spoke to El Mayimbe over at Latino Review, Zack Snyder will tweet out five seconds of the trailer at 9:00 am PST on Thursday morning. That’s one full hour before the start of Star Wars celebration.

This just makes it one of the best weeks for movie news in a long time. This week, Avengers: Age of Ultron, will be opening in theaters, along with the much-anticipated Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens trailer.

According to El Mayimbe’s Instagram page, people will be able to follow a link from Snyder that will allow them to sign up to see the full trailer in a movie theater on April 20th.

If the rumors are also to be believed, the trailer will be in front of showings of Avengers: Age of Ultron as well. Wow. Trailers for Star Wars and Batman v Superman in one theater is a recipe for fan boy heart attacks!

Stunts like this are not uncommon. Well before Star Trek Into Darkness hit theaters, director J.J. Abrams showed a fraction of a second of footage on Conan. While only three frames of footage, it sent the Internet into a tizzy. Expect this to do the same.

Now that this has been leaked, we will have to wait and see if DC and Warner Bros. blink, and decide to alter their plans. Those of us who really want to see a preview of this movie (ahem!) really hope that they stick to their guns. Either way, this will be a fantastic week for comic book movie fans.

If history is any indication, these rumors are probably right on the mark. Latino Review has a knack for breaking news that is completely accurate. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that this is just as accurate as the majority of their scoops are!

Come on Snyder, don’t let us down!!

New Maggie Poster Shows Arnold Protecting His Zombie Daughter

From ComicBook.com

image.jpg

A new poster has been released for the zombie-drama Maggie, which features the film's stars Arnold Schwarzenegger (Twins) and Abigail Breslin (Zombieland).

Arnold Schwarzenegger has tackled many genres during his long and illustrious career, like action, fantasy and comedy, but drama is not one of his strengths. Will that change once people see him in Maggie? He plays a father that is trying his best to protect his infected daughter (Breslin) during a zombie epidemic.

Maggie was directed by Henry Hobson, based on a screenplay by John Scott 3 (3?!). It also stars Joely Richardson, Laura Cayouette, and Dana Gourrier, check out the trailer below.

Check out the new poster below.
